Yoga comes from the ancient Sanskrit language. The root word is YUG, which translates as "to yoke, or join, connect, or unite".

WHAT IS YOGA?

Yoga is a practical system or lifestyle 
​which was developed by those who found their way into a state of harmonious connection with All of Life.
"It's common that many people think of yoga as the postures or asanas. Sometimes, someone asks me to demonstrate Yoga. I say, 'It can't be done because it can't be seen you may perhaps perceive the internal state of harmony.'  

It's important to realize that even if someone can do a visually beautiful performance of these asanas, ego may be still be involved and therefore its just another way to gain recognition, approval which is not the aim. The purpose its to harmonize one's body, mind and spirit to experience a state of connection with the Sacred.

THE 8 STEPS OF YOGA

In the Yogic System of Liberation (from the pain of separateness) there are 8 practical steps, or limbs, that one has to master in order to achieve a state of union.

​A SHORT INTRODUCTION

  • Morality (Yamas): basically ethics to live by, such as Non-harming, Being Truthful, Non-stealing, universal thinking, non-hoarding or simplifying. 
  • Discipline (Niyama): physical and mental purifications, contentment, Self study and social service, inspirational or philosophical studies, meditation.
  • Physical Exercise (Asanas): Asanas are a common misconception of yoga is that it's just the movement. Physical and mental exercises to purify body & mind in order to fulfill our purpose.
  • Breath Control (Pranayama): working or managing the Life Force through breath control. 
  • Detachment (Pratyahara): practices to manage the senses.
  • Concentration (Dharana): Focus of the mind.
  • Meditation (Dhyana): Meditation
  • Self-Realization (Samadhi): Liberation.
